I'd wondered with the traveling we're doing this summer seeing relatives and spending 0 times with Brazilians, how the kids' Portuguese would be. In fact, it's gotten better. I'm assuming it's because they're spending more time with me than they did when they were in school. I really do sometimes push myself to play a game or do something I don't want to do (something they're wanting to play with me than normally I'd say 'no' to) because I want to work with them in Portuguese. So it basically gets me spending more time with them. I never considered this a benefit.

The Galbreath family reunion has been so much fun and people don't seem to look at me like I'm a nut for speaking Portuguese. I guess I can understand b/c in previous reunions (they are held only every 2 years and I miss plenty of them), I was speaking to them but they weren't really talking yet so it looked strange. We're really reaping the benefits now, as they age.

My sister-in -law recommended some books to read to the kids on SEX. She said even at their age, her kids are talking about it on the playground and she wanted them to hear it first from her. I wish I had a source in Portuguese. Sometimes it seems things are always complicated by having a second language. Because, too, I don't want them only to know how to say certain things in Portuguese (though in some circumstances this might work well).
